Reforma Social, Domingo Ramos, Museo Calderón Guardia, San José. Domingo Ramos: 50 años de carrera escultórica celebrates five decades of sculptural work by the Costa Rican master. The exhibition, titled Reforma Social, presents Domingo Ramos’s sculptures in a wide range of materials, from hard woods, local stones like andesites, diorites, tobitas, and also marble, bronze, and resin. It shows how his practice has evolved and responded to tradition and experimentation. Located in Barrio Escalante, San José, the show is free to the public and runs through 11 October. 2. Espacio, Osvaldo Sequeira, Galería UCR, University of Costa Rica, San José. As part of the University of Costa Rica’s 85th anniversary celebrations, the UCR Gallery (Administrative Building B) presents ESPACIO, a solo exhibition by Osvaldo Sequeira opening 25 August. Known for his figurative paintings informed by a background in illustration, Sequeira reflects on contemporary life through layered depictions of the body and its environment. The exhibition will feature recent works that expand his ongoing investigation into gesture, surface, and narrative. On view until 8 October, this Osvaldo Sequeira exhibition highlights his position within Costa Rica’s evolving conversation around contemporary figuration. 3. Enar Cruz, Jorge Murillo, Andrés Ramírez, Mariechen Wust, Marta Yglesias, Galería Talentum Barrio Escalante, San José. This show presents works by the Costa Rican artists Jorge Murillo, Enar Cruz, Mariechen Wust, Andrés Ramírez, and Marta Yglesias. Whether you're familiar with these names or encountering their work for the first time, it promises an eclectic mix of styles and perspectives, united by strong technical skill and a refined visual approach. 4. Un verde inalcanzable, Sergio Rojas Chaves, deCERCA Nosara, Sendero Hotel, Nosara. Un verde inalcanzable marks the first solo exhibition by Costa Rican artist Sergio Rojas Chaves. Known for his investigations into tropical flora and everyday life, Rojas turns his attention here to the overlooked presence of death in plant care. The exhibition reflects on cycles of life and decay, looking at the quiet meditation on the emotional and symbolic weight of greenery within domestic spaces. Re-fresh opens at San José gallery artflow with a stellar line-up of talent: MÍRAME artists Carlos Fernández, Christian Porras, Emilia Cantor (The Luminous Cattle), Katrin Aason, and Emmanuel Rodríguez are all showing new work. The exhibition promises a mix of voices and styles, all highlighting Costa Rica’s evolving contemporary art scene within Latin America. Re-fresh is an opportunity to engage with what’s happening in Costa Rican art today. 6. Donde de diluyen las cosas, Alejandra Ramirez León, Museum of Costa Rican Art, San José. On until 23 November. A solo exhibition by Costa Rican artist Alejandra Ramírez León. Installed in the Sala Temporales at the Museum of Costa Rican Art in La Sabana, San José, the show features twelve works, mostly mixed-media polyptychs, along with oil and watercolour, created from her family archive. By layering, fragmenting and intervening in these images, Costa Rican artist Alejandra Ramírez León investigates memory, and the passage of time. Entry is free, and the exhibition is open to all.
