Description

Miguel Hernández Bastos employs a unique technique in his artworks, using pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, and the unconventional medium of smoke from an oil lamp, which burns onto the canvas like pigment.

This distinctive approach allows him to delve into themes of metamorphosis and the fleeting essence of the human form, while also incorporating historical symbolism associated with the candle in Renaissance portraiture.

This ethereal smoke painting, “Abrazo IV” captures a poignant, sensual moment, erotic embrace with two figures painted with delicate, wispy strokes, entwined in a tender embrace. The erotic embrace weaves a narrative that reflects on the universal experiences of incompleteness, pain, and vulnerability.

Predominantly working in black and white, the artist occasionally introduces subtle hints of colour over the smoke, adding layers of depth to his figures and enhancing their presence on the canvas. This ethereal smoke painting evokes a sense of both intimacy and impermanence, highlighting the fleeting nature of human connection.
