Description

Pablo Mejias’ Bufón (which means Jester in English) exemplifies his oeuvre that centres on themes of death, eroticism, and metaphysics, often exploring the human condition. Mejias depicts hellscapes, a glimpse into human desire and fears, which invite viewers to confront the ineffable and the complexities of existence.

Mejias predominately works with oil paint on canvas, but he occasionally works in pencil, such as in this jester pencil drawing. His work always resonates with dark and unsettling themes, where the grotesque and the fantastic intertwine. Inspired by personal trauma, particularly the loss of his brother at a young age, Mejias delves into the human psyche, depicting turmoil and existential angst.

This jester pencil drawing by Mejias featuring an isolated head caught with a surprised and distressed expression, with a small bird perched on its head, seemingly on the verge of taking flight. The juxtaposition of the jester-like expression and the bird’s imminent departure evokes an uneasy feeling, perhaps symbolising the fleeting nature of joy or the weight of impending change
