Pablo Mejias’ oeuvre centres on themes of death, eroticism, and metaphysics, often exploring the human condition. Mejias depicts hellscapes, a glimpse into human desire and fears, which invite viewers to confront the ineffable and the complexities of existence.
Mejias predominately works with oil paint, but he occasionally produces ink on paper pieces, such as La Titiritera (the title means ‘the puppeteer’ in English). His work always resonates with dark and unsettling themes, where the grotesque and the fantastic intertwine. Inspired by personal trauma, particularly the loss of his brother at a young age, Mejias delves into the human psyche, depicting turmoil and existential angst.
This puppeteer ink on paper portrays a young girl holding a multitude of puppets, each adorned in unique costumes, all sharing her tranquil gaze. Mejias explores themes of creativity and the transformative power of storytelling through the girl’s presence and the silent companionship of her puppet ensemble. Despite the surreal nature of this puppeteer ink on paper, it emanates a sense of ease and fascination.
