Description

Pablo Mejias’ oeuvre centres on themes of death, eroticism, and metaphysics, often exploring the human condition. Mejias depicts hellscapes, a glimpse into human desire and fears, which invite viewers to confront the ineffable and the complexities of existence.

This niña perdida painting (the title meaning ‘lost girl’ in English) is typical of Mejias’ work, which resonates with dark and unsettling themes, where the grotesque and the fantastic intertwine. Inspired by personal trauma, particularly the loss of his brother at a young age, Mejias delves into the human psyche, depicting turmoil and existential angst.

In this niña perdida painting, Mejias presents a haunting narrative of disappearance and dissolution. The central figure, a girl, is depicted fading from view towards the left of the canvas, her form gradually dissipating into shades of red against a contrasting blue interior. The recurring image of an upside-down bird suspended by its foot adds to the surreal atmosphere of the painting, suggesting a theme of disorientation and imbalance.
