Description

This Adrián Arguedas painting, “Sara #2” portrays a vivid close-up of a young girl in a bathing suit clutching a surf or body board. Arguedas brings to life a moment of youthful exuberance and seaside leisure. The composition draws viewers into the intimate scene, where the subject’s expression and posture convey a sense of anticipation and adventure.

The use of colour in Adrián Arguedas painting is dynamic and emotive, with a rich palette that enhances the vibrancy of the scene while injecting it with a sense of warmth and nostalgia. The juxtaposition of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the painting, creating a sense of movement and energy that is palpable to the viewer.

Influenced by the famous mask parades of the Costa Rican town where Arguedas grew up, his figurative work embraces the spirit of masquerade even if masks are not depicted as he explores the various guises people adopt. Always referencing popular culture, his work presents masks as archetypes, depicting patterns of behaviour, encouraging us to scrutinise our own multifaceted human experience. Even when Arguedas is not painting literal masks, he captures the way individuals project their identities, affirming that even “your face is a mask”.
