Don't miss the exciting art exhibitions and events happening in Costa Rica this week!

This week, we’re pleased to celebrate Adrián Arguedas and the launch of the catalogue for Valle Oscuro, his groundbreaking exhibition held at the Museum of Costa Rican Art in November 2023.

Costa Rica boasts a dynamic contemporary art scene, which is gaining increased attention from international audiences. While the country’s breathtaking landscapes are a key source of inspiration for many artists, Costa Rican art extends far beyond these natural beauties.

The country’s art scene is marked by a diverse range of artistic expressions. Local Costa Rican artists are creating high-calibre, thought-provoking works that address complex themes, from identity and environment to socio-political issues.

From the bustling streets of San José to the quieter coastal towns, Costa Rica hosts a variety of galleries, exhibitions, and cultural events that highlight the emerging talent shaping the country's artistic identity. Even for those unable to attend these events in person, MÍRAME’s regular exhibition highlights offer a curated glimpse into this flourishing scene.

Catalogue Launch for Valle Oscuro, Museo de Arte Costarricense, San José. 24 April | 7pm.

The Museo de Arte Costarricense (Museum of Costa Rican Art) will host the official launch of the Valle Oscuro exhibition catalogue on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. The Valle Oscuro exhibition, which opened in November 2023, drew an exceptional turnout, with hundreds of visitors attending the opening night. This special event at the museum will include a musical performance by Marvin Camacho.

Balance. Angel Lara V, Maxime Viellard, Gallery of Nosara Art, Playa Guiones, Guanacaste. On until 29 April.

This exhibition brings together sculptor Ángel Lara Vargas and painter Maxime Viellard to explore the theme of tension — physical and emotional — through contrasting materials and forms. Vargas, known for his large-scale public works and refined sculptural language, presents new pieces that depart from traditional stone carving to investigate object hood and functionality. Viellard, whose practice is informed by his relationship with nature, contributes works that reflect a quieter, introspective response to the natural world and its inherent equilibrium.

Otto Soto Castrillo. Herencia de Mitos y Tradiciones, Galería Nacional, Museo de los Niños, San José. On through April.

Otto Soto Castrillo presents his first solo exhibition, Herencia de Mitos y Tradiciones (Heritage of Myths and Traditions), at Galería Nacional in San José. The exhibition explores folkloric narratives from Costa Rica’s cultural memory, exploring visual languages shaped by Otto Soto Castrillo’s background in graphic design and art direction.

While relatively new to the gallery scene, Otto Soto Castrillo has developed a distinctive style that blends illustrative detail with mythological themes, seeking to reflect both historical motifs and contemporary interpretations. The exhibition is expected to highlight his interest in how oral tradition and national identity intersect within visual storytelling.

Herencia de Mitos y Tradiciones runs through April at the Galería Nacional, which continues its programme of showcasing emerging voices alongside established figures in Costa Rican art.

Eva Fakatselis, Burn. Transform. Repeat, deCERCA, Sendero Hotel, Nosara, Guanacaste.

In her latest exhibition, Greek artist Eva Fakatselis investigates fire as an agent of memory and metamorphosis. Through expansive, gestural paintings and sculptures composed of resin, ash, wood, ink, and iron—including materials salvaged from Guanacaste’s wildfires and bonfires—Fakatselis channels alchemical symbolism and classical myth, inviting contemplation on destruction’s beauty and the perpetual cycle of renewal inherent in symbolic death and rebirth.

Philipp Anaskin exhibition, TRANCE O SIMULACRO, Sendero Cultural House, Barrio Escalante, San José.

Translated as "TRANCE OR DRILL", the Philipp Anaskin exhibition at the Sendero cultural house, Barrio Escalante, includes a new series of 25 never before exhibited paintings that will form part of the artistic programme Transitarte. The opening night is on 28 March at 7pm - all are welcome and entry is free.

Ivanna Yujimets, If We Had Met, abra.espacio, San José. On until mid-May.

"If We Had Met" by Ivanna Yujimets marks the first sample show of the year at the not-for-profit independent art space abra.espacio.

The show is a great opportunity to get to know Yujimets' practice, which reimagines well-known fictional and pop culture figures, reshaping their meanings to reflect personal and emotional themes. Her work moves between fantasy and reality, creating connections that reveal deeper complexities upon closer observation.

Luis Tenorio, Ariela Feinzaig, Ariane Garnier, Rosalía Waisman, Anabelle Nuñez, Galería Talentum, San José. On until 31 May.

Galería Talentum in San José’s Barrio Amón brings together five artists whose practices explore memory, materiality, and personal mythologies. The show features works by Luis Tenorio, Ariela Feinzaig, Ariane Garnier, Rosalía Waisman, and Anabelle Nuñez, each offering a distinct visual language shaped by introspection and layered histories. The exhibition continues Talentum’s focus on elevating diverse voices within Costa Rica’s contemporary art landscape, blending established figures with rising talent.

Sumersión, Centro Cultural de España en Costa Rica, San José. On until 15 June.

The upcoming exhibition "Sumersión" at the Cultural Center of Spain in the Escalante neighbourhood explores water as a contested territory—highlighting access, inequality, and environmental crisis.

Five artists, including Karla Herencia, Laura Cruz, Lorena Villalobos, Lucía Madriz, and Maga González, bring diverse perspectives through transdisciplinary art, movement, sound, and ecological illustration.

Curated by Iris Lam Chen, the show delves into water’s symbolic, material, and political dimensions. The exhibition runs until 15 June, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Camila Capra: Something to remember me by, deCERCA, Los Yoses, San José.

Camila Capra’s deCERCA exhibition examines the home as an emotional archive and a site of transformation. Using clay as her primary medium, she explores how everyday objects transcend function, becoming vessels for memory and human experience. The works reflect on domestic space as a container and a catalyst for personal narratives.

Visit times posted weekly on deCERCA platforms.
