Description

This oil painting by Adrián Arguedas is inspired by the literary works of Cervantes, transporting viewers into a surreal realm where traditional scenery flirts with fantasy.

Arguedas depicts the rolling fields, majestic mountains, and expansive sky of Costa Rica and against this backdrop, a vibrant array of balloons featuring beloved cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty and Minions floats gracefully overhead. The painting has a touch of lighthearted charm, as well a sense of the uncanny.

Arguedas’ unique blend of realism and imagination contemplates reality and fantasy as did Cervantes, exploring the depths of our own imaginations.

The juxtaposition of the serene scenery with the unexpected presence of the oversized balloons rising above Costa Rica creates a sense of curiosity. The painting is a homage to the Costa Rica’s natural world, while also referencing Adrián Arguedas’ typical exploration of the relationship between humanity and the environment. Arguedas has an affinity for appropriating commonplace imagery and recontextualising it in unexpected scenarios, echoing Surrealist tendencies.
