Held in the resort’s light-filled studio space overlooking Culebra Bay, the exhibition brings together emerging and established voices in a setting that encourages thoughtful engagement. Highlights include textile work by Katrin Aason, underwater photography by Edwar Herreno, and gyotaku prints by Playas del Coco-based artist Jimmy Downing. This exhibition brings together sculptor Ángel Lara Vargas and painter Maxime Viellard to explore the theme of tension — physical and emotional — through contrasting materials and forms. Vargas, known for his large-scale public works and refined sculptural language, presents new pieces that depart from traditional stone carving to investigate object hood and functionality. Viellard, whose practice is informed by his relationship with nature, contributes works that reflect a quieter, introspective response to the natural world and its inherent equilibrium. Otto Soto Castrillo presents his first solo exhibition, Herencia de Mitos y Tradiciones (Heritage of Myths and Traditions), at Galería Nacional in San José. The exhibition explores folkloric narratives from Costa Rica’s cultural memory, exploring visual languages shaped by Otto Soto Castrillo’s background in graphic design and art direction. While relatively new to the gallery scene, Otto Soto Castrillo has developed a distinctive style that blends illustrative detail with mythological themes, seeking to reflect both historical motifs and contemporary interpretations. The exhibition is expected to highlight his interest in how oral tradition and national identity intersect within visual storytelling. Herencia de Mitos y Tradiciones runs through April at the Galería Nacional, which continues its programme of showcasing emerging voices alongside established figures in Costa Rican art. Eva Fakatselis, Burn. Transform. Repeat, deCERCA, Sendero Hotel, Nosara, Guanacaste. In her latest exhibition, Greek artist Eva Fakatselis investigates fire as an agent of memory and metamorphosis. Through expansive, gestural paintings and sculptures composed of resin, ash, wood, ink, and iron—including materials salvaged from Guanacaste’s wildfires and bonfires—Fakatselis channels alchemical symbolism and classical myth, inviting contemplation on destruction’s beauty and the perpetual cycle of renewal inherent in symbolic death and rebirth. Philipp Anaskin exhibition, TRANCE O SIMULACRO, Sendero Cultural House, Barrio Escalante, San José. Translated as "TRANCE OR DRILL", the Philipp Anaskin exhibition at the Sendero cultural house, Barrio Escalante, includes a new series of 25 never before exhibited paintings that will form part of the artistic programme Transitarte. "If We Had Met" by Ivanna Yujimets marks the first sample show of the year at the not-for-profit independent art space abra.espacio. The show is a great opportunity to get to know Yujimets' practice, which reimagines well-known fictional and pop culture figures, reshaping their meanings to reflect personal and emotional themes. Her work moves between fantasy and reality, creating connections that reveal deeper complexities upon closer observation. The upcoming exhibition "Sumersión" at the Cultural Center of Spain in the Escalante neighbourhood explores water as a contested territory—highlighting access, inequality, and environmental crisis. Five artists, including Karla Herencia, Laura Cruz, Lorena Villalobos, Lucía Madriz, and Maga González, bring diverse perspectives through transdisciplinary art, movement, sound, and ecological illustration. Curated by Iris Lam Chen, the show delves into water’s symbolic, material, and political dimensions. Camila Capra’s deCERCA exhibition examines the home as both an emotional archive and a site of transformation.
