This week, we're excited for MÍRAME's presentation at Future Fair in NYC and, closer to home in Costa Rica, check out the weekend workshop by Mat Kar, part of the Festival Calicanto in Cartago.

While the country’s breathtaking landscapes are a key source of inspiration for many artists, Costa Rican art extends far beyond these natural beauties.The country’s art scene is marked by a diverse range of artistic expressions. Local Costa Rican artists are creating high-calibre, thought-provoking works that address complex themes, from identity and environment to socio-political issues.

From the bustling streets of San José to the quieter coastal towns, Costa Rica hosts a variety of galleries, exhibitions, and cultural events that highlight the emerging talent shaping the country's artistic identity. Mat Kar, Soy una Venus, Plaza Mayor, San José, Saturday, 10 May | 9am–12pm

Costa Rican visual artist Mat Kar leads a participatory workshop titled “Soy una Venus” as part of the Festival Calicanto, Cartago 2025. Known for her work across photography, video, and installation, Kar's practice explores identity, the body, and collective memory through feminist and decolonial lenses. Mat Kar projects often invite public collaboration and celebrate bodily diversity.

This open, inclusive event offers participants the chance to:

• Sculpt a clay Venus, inspired by prehistoric figures that honour strength and diversity.

• Draw their own body as an act of deep self-recognition

• Take part in a unique photo session in a specially created scenographic set

Patrick Hüttlinger, Go Beyond: Interactions with Delight, Gallery of Nosara Art, Guiones, Guanacaste. OPENING Saturday 10 May, 6-9pm. On until 27 May.

At the Gallery of Nosara Art, artist Patrick Huttlinger presents a new exhibition opening 10 May that explores the visual language of sacred geometry and symbolism. Through intricate patterns and spiritual motifs, Huttlinger works to transcend dogma into a shared, unifying field of perception. The show is staged in partnership with Costas Verdes, with a portion of proceeds supporting coastal reforestation efforts in Costa Rica. The opening runs from 6–9pm at GONA Gallery, above Banco Popular in Guiones, with the exhibition running until 27 May.

Ivanna Yujimets, If We Had Met, abra.espacio, San José. On until mid-May.

"If We Had Met" by Ivanna Yujimets marks the first sample show of the year at the not-for-profit independent art space abra.espacio.

The show is a great opportunity to get to know Yujimets' practice, which reimagines well-known fictional and pop culture figures, reshaping their meanings to reflect personal and emotional themes. Her work moves between fantasy and reality, creating connections that reveal deeper complexities upon closer observation.

Galería Talentum in San José’s Barrio Amón brings together five artists whose practices explore memory, materiality, and personal mythologies. The show features works by Luis Tenorio, Ariela Feinzaig, Ariane Garnier, Rosalía Waisman, and Anabelle Nuñez, each offering a distinct visual language shaped by introspection and layered histories. The exhibition continues Talentum’s focus on elevating diverse voices within Costa Rica’s contemporary art landscape, blending established figures with rising talent.

Sumersión, Centro Cultural de España en Costa Rica, San José. On until 15 June.

The upcoming exhibition "Sumersión" at the Cultural Center of Spain in the Escalante neighbourhood explores water as a contested territory—highlighting access, inequality, and environmental crisis.

Five artists, including Karla Herencia, Laura Cruz, Lorena Villalobos, Lucía Madriz, and Maga González, bring diverse perspectives through transdisciplinary art, movement, sound, and ecological illustration.

Curated by Iris Lam Chen, the show delves into water’s symbolic, material, and political dimensions. The exhibition runs until 15 June, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Camila Capra: Something to remember me by, deCERCA, Los Yoses, San José.

Camila Capra’s deCERCA exhibition examines the home as an emotional archive and a site of transformation. Using clay as her primary medium, she explores how everyday objects transcend function, becoming vessels for memory and human experience. The works reflect on domestic space as a container and a catalyst for personal narratives.
