Lives and works in San José
Hyperrealist artist Eliecer Rodríguez brings a strikingly detailed approach to the urgent issue of environmental degradation. Born in Heredia in 1978, Rodríguez has developed a unique visual language that juxtaposes everyday objects, such as plastic bags and disposable cups, with natural elements like the ocean and marine life. His work is a poignant commentary on the impact of consumerism, inviting viewers to reflect on the ecological consequences of modern life.
Rodríguez’s career began in the mid-1990s, under the guidance of respected artists Luis Paulino Delgado and Guillermo Porras. His formal education continued at the University of Costa Rica, where he honed his skills in various disciplines, further enriched by specialized workshops with Cuban printmaker Luis Miguel Valdés. Since 2009, Rodríguez has also worked as an assistant to the renowned Cuban artist Tomás Sánchez, an experience that has significantly influenced his technical and conceptual development.
In his hyperrealist paintings, Rodríguez blurs the line between art and reality, using meticulous detail to emphasize the immediacy of environmental challenges. A plastic cup floating alongside a shark, for instance, transforms from a mundane object into a symbol of a broader ecological crisis. Such imagery forces the viewer to confront the often-overlooked consequences of consumer culture, making the impact of these issues both urgent and inescapable.
“My connection to the sea and the ecological heritage of my country is a constant source of inspiration,” Rodríguez notes. This deep-rooted connection is evident in his work, which challenges perceptions and encourages a more thoughtful engagement with the natural world. Throughout his career, Rodríguez has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, gaining recognition for his distinctive style and the compelling themes he explores.
As Rodríguez’s reputation continues to grow, his work remains a powerful call to action, urging a reevaluation of our relationship with the environment and the often unseen repercussions of everyday choices.
