In her acclaimed series inspired by the performance ‘Fangal (Bog)’, exhibited at Cero Uno in San José in 2022, Lucía Howell Vargas donned a striking black costume adorned with tendrils, moving dynamically within the gallery space as spectators encircled her. It was hard to see where the artist’s body ended and the costume began. Through her meticulously choreographed yet intentionally constrained movements, she assumed an otherworldly guise, blurring the boundaries between humanity and the unknown. The accompanying paintings, capturing intimate snapshots of the performance, evoke a surreal, almost alien aesthetic, mirroring Howell Vargas’ transformation into a physical manifestation of her artistic vision.

These paintings are more than mere visual representations—they are windows into the soul of a performance. They convey the palpable energy that coursed through the gallery space, and the palpable tension between reality and illusion.

For Howell Vargas, performance art is not just about spectacle; it is about forging connections, fostering empathy, and challenging the very essence of what it means to be human. Through her immersive experiences, she invites us to delve deep into the recesses of our own consciousness, confronting the mysteries that lie dormant within us all. For Howell Vargas, performance is not just an act—it is a transformative journey, a testament to the boundless power of artistic expression.
