Sylvia Laks’ portraits are inspired by diverse themes and influences, including the human body, identity, memory, landscape, and spirituality. Working with a variety of materials, from charcoal and pastel drawings to oil painting on linen, Laks presents a myriad of mythical and mystical worlds straight from her imagination.

In addition to her paintings and drawings, Laks is a skilled stained glass artist. She owns her own studio where she creates and restores stained glass pieces while teaching the process. Since age twenty-five, Laks has worked with glass, using the grisaille technique to manipulate pigments, temperature, and glass textures, creating striking atmospheres through the play of light.

This four-panel stained glass piece depicts a scene from The Last of the Mohicans, showcasing native men in a boat approaching the shore, surrounded by a lush, untamed wilderness. Laks’ use of colour in the glass panels brings dynamic movement to the scene, conveying a sense of adventure and discovery.

Laks is a stained glass artist who is a master of capturing everyday scenes and bringing them to life by manipulating how light passes through glass. Here, this literary moment is portrayed with exceptional detail and atmosphere, demonstrating her versatility and technical precision.
