Description

Aside from watercolour and oil painting, Adrián Arguedas is a practitioner of traditional Costa Rican artistic methods, such as woodcuts and engraving. This print features figures lying in beds, each accompanied by two ghostly figures standing watch above them. Arguedas’s depiction invites contemplation, offering a glimpse into the seen and the unseen, the tangible and the ephemeral.

Rendered with detail and evocative symbolism, this print explores themes of presence and absence, drawing viewers into a narrative rich with layers of meaning. The figures, rendered in a subtle palette, exude a sense of quiet introspection, while the ghostly apparitions hovering above add an element of mystery and intrigue.

Concerned with the balance of contrasts, Arguedas explores dichotomies such as life vs death, tall vs small, and beauty vs ugliness. The juxtaposition between the playful and the violent is a central theme, driven by an undercurrent of parody that imparts a critical dimension to his canvases, and reveals a marked European influence from artists such as Pieter Brueghel, Hieronymus Bosch and Edward Hopper.

This piece is an example of Arguedas’ talent for injecting a contemporary twist into traditional subject matter within Costa Rican art traditions.
