Colour, Form, and the Cosmos: Inside Milo Gonzalez's Latest Works

Milo Gonzalez’s latest series, “Imágenes Cosmagónicas” (Cosmogonical Images), forms an important part of the current exhibition at San José’s Galería Talentum. Known for his bold explorations of form and colour, Gonzalez interrogates cosmic and astrological art themes through a set of large-scale canvases that command attention for their technical precision and conceptual depth.

Astrological Art and Visual Fluidity

While some of Gonzalez’s canvases incorporate figurative elements, astrology serves primarily as a conceptual starting point rather than a direct subject. His focus shifts toward the interaction of geometric shapes, vibrant colour fields, and the fluidity that emerges between these visual components. "For me, it’s all about the plasticity of the image itself," Gonzalez explains, emphasising his interest in the adaptability and dynamic potential of form.

The resulting works hum with energy, engaging viewers in an open-ended visual dialogue. The cosmic references remain abstract, offering a framework rather than a literal depiction, encouraging contemplation on the relationships between the forms and the broader, intangible themes they evoke.

A Focus on Form and Colour

This focus on the formal aspects of painting – colour, shape, and their relationship on the canvas – is characteristic of Gonzalez's broader body of work. His background in fine arts and his sustained interest in the metaphysical have led him to a unique position within the Costa Rican art scene.

He avoids overly representational approaches, instead allowing the viewer to engage with the image as an independent entity, free from prescriptive meaning. The new works in "Imágenes Cosmagónicas" continue this trajectory, showcasing his ability to combine abstraction with a sense of conceptual inquiry.

From Tradition to Innovation

Gonzalez's art sits between classical Costa Rican motifs and modern expressions. His energetic cityscapes, evocative jazz club scenes, and depictions of traditional subjects—such as bulls and plantain sellers—demonstrate his refined ability to infuse conventional themes with a contemporary twist. His use of earthy ochre tones reflects his childhood memories of visits to the National Museum, where he was captivated by Aboriginal urns and artifacts.

Texture and Technique

A self-taught artist, Gonzalez's unique style is deeply rooted in his childhood influences and personal experiences. His exposure to art and music from a young age has shaped his distinctive approach, characterised by bold brushstrokes and a natural colour palette punctuated by expressive, bright tones.

Gonzalez’s paintings are known for their highly textured surfaces, which enhance both the tactile and visual experience of his art. His spontaneous methodology allows colours and forms to evolve organically during the creative process. “The colours present themselves; they are not planned. They flow through me,” Gonzalez notes.

A Diverse Group Exhibition

This astrological art series contributes to the larger narrative of the current group exhibition at Galería Talentum, where Gonzalez is joined by four other prominent Costa Rican artists. Emilia Cantor, Sofía Ruiz, Pablo Mejías, and Jorge Crespo each present work in their own dedicated spaces, exploring themes ranging from memory and identity to landscape and migration.

Gonzalez's new astrology art series, with its bold forms and striking colour contrasts, offers a compelling counterpoint to the more narrative-driven works by his fellow artists. Together, the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of contemporary Costa Rican art, with each artist contributing a unique voice to the conversation.
