Mejia is a prominent figure in Costa Rican contemporary art, known for his exploration of social issues through his bold figurative paintings. His practice, influenced by Baroque tenebrism and Catholic symbolism, focuses on themes of faith, humanity and personal history.
In this Dreamland series, Mejia presents a luminous shift into the subconscious, trading realism for sensory and symbolic landscapes shaped by dreams, childhood memory, and emotional release.
In “Ilusión Esmeralda” (Emerald Illusion), Mejia presents a glowing green orb nestled within a swirl of fabric and starlike points of light. The composition leans heavily on texture and saturation, with dense greens and amber tones dominating the scene.
Unlike more figurative works in Mejia’s Dreamland series, this emerald illusion painting shifts toward abstraction, allowing formal elements to take precedence over character or setting. The glowing sphere becomes a visual anchor, though its scale and substance remain intentionally ambiguous. The surrounding details, such as the folds, sparkles and shadows, suggest motion and depth, but without clarifying narrative.
