Known for her contribution to Costa Rica's watercolour tradition, Fernández explores the delicate balance of life and death in her latest series. This exhibition includes paintings of fragile birds depicted in stillness, each rendered with precision and sensitivity that invites quiet contemplation. The birds, portrayed post-mortem, emphasise the vulnerability inherent in nature. The exhibition positions Fernández as an essential voice in the Costa Rican art scene at Galería Etérea, one of San José's renowned contemporary art galleries. Juan Carlos Camacho | VIDA Art Gallery, San José From October 22 to 30, VIDA Art Gallery in Escazú will host an exhibition by one of Costa Rica's most celebrated watercolour artists, Juan Carlos Camacho. Known for his distinctive fusion of art and architecture, Camacho’s work brings life to the often rigid forms of structures, bathing them in a luminous play of light and colour. His watercolours hold an ethereal quality, where buildings seem to breathe within their natural settings. Camacho’s architectural background deeply informs his practice, blending precise structural forms with fluid, atmospheric scenes. This exhibition at VIDA Art Gallery presents a rare chance to witness how his unique approach revitalises watercolour, a medium that, in his hands, captures the delicate balance between nature and the built environment. Jesús Mejia, "Bitácora Del Sueño Eterno", Casa Jimensez Sancho, Cartago Jesús Mejía, a celebrated Costa Rican artist recognized with the 2023 Francisco Amighetti National Visual Arts Award and recently awarded third place at the 2024 CROMA Biennial, presents his latest exhibition, "Bitácora Del Sueño Eterno" (Diary of the Eternal Dream), at Casa Jiménez Sancho in Cartago. Known for blending Catholic iconography with social commentary, Mejía shifts from societal themes to a deeply personal focus in this new series. Inspired by his experiences as a caregiver for his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, Mejía explores the physical and emotional weight of caregiving, as well as the unspoken challenges faced by his mother in her role as a caregiver. Sofía Ruiz, Oil and acrylic on canvas The group exhibition at Galería Talentum in San José is hosting a new exhibition on until 30 November 2024, featuring five prominent Costa Rican artists. Each artist presents a distinct body of work across separate rooms, offering a diverse exploration of contemporary themes within Costa Rican art. The exhibition includes four artists represented by MÍRAME Fine Art, an online platform dedicated to supporting local talent. Emilia Cantor’s Mundos Ocultos ("Hidden Worlds") presents nine paintings that blend classical techniques with modernist elements, depicting mystical female figures in dreamlike, symbolic landscapes. In Imágenes Cosmagónicas ("Cosmogonical Images"), Milo Gonzalez draws inspiration from astrology, creating large canvases that emphasize color, form, and the interpretive nature of cosmic forces. Sofía Ruiz’s Rastros ("Traces") series explores memory and identity, using layered textures to reflect themes of familial disconnection and emotional resonance. Pablo Mejías debuts his first solo drawing series, La Naturaleza Erógena de la Monstruosidad ("The Erogenous Nature of Monstrosity"), focusing on life’s impermanence through monochromatic images of submerged figures and decaying animals. Finally, Jorge Crespo’s Migrantes ("Migrants") contemplates migration as a journey of self-discovery, addressing themes of displacement and identity. Paz Ulloa | VESICA ELIPTA, cero uno, San José Costa Rican sculptor Paz Ulloa, known as "White Mountain," is rapidly gaining recognition as a leading figure in contemporary art. Initially a painter, Ulloa transitioned to sculpture to explore the physicality of form and space, using materials like steel, glass, and wood. The innovative work of Paz Ulloa blur the lines between art and utility, compelling viewers to reconsider their relationship with everyday objects. Central to her practice is a meditation on time and daily life, with pieces that introduce elements of the surreal into familiar forms. Her upcoming residency at Cero Uno in San José, starting on August 31, is a unique opportunity to experience Paz Ulloa's work in one of Costa Rica's most innovative and exciting independent art spaces.
