Lives and works in San José
Julio Sequeira has dedicated over three decades to documenting people and nature. His approach to photography is characterised by a deep focus on highlighting the fundamental qualities of his subjects.
In his nature photography, Sequeira exhibits an unwavering guarantee to taking the perfect shot, often undertaking considerable risks to achieve his vision. Whether dangling from a bridge to photograph a bungee jumper or scaling trees and cliffs to obtain the ideal vantage point, Sequeira consistently prioritises the integrity of the image. This commitment reflects his belief that depicting the essence of a scene is paramount, regardless of the challenges involved.
Sequeira applies the same level of intensity to portraiture, believing that a portrait should reveal the inner world of its subject rather than merely their external features. To achieve this, he engages with his subjects through interviews, ensuring that the resulting image reflects their true character. His portraits aim to represent likeness as well as the individuality and spirit of the person.
Influenced by pioneers such as Ansel Adams, Sequeira began his career with analog photography, using black and white to highlight the intricate details of nature. His shift to digital photography has allowed him to further explore these foundational techniques.
Sequeira’s work has been showcased by the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism and in international publications including GUIDE Magazine and American Survival Guide Magazine. His extensive portfolio encompasses movement photography, documenting events such as the World Jazz Congress and serving as the Official Photographer for Dance Educator of America in Costa Rica.
Why We Love This Artist
Julio is someone we have watched grow into one of the most promising photographers working in San José today — precise, technically rigorous, and with a rare instinct for finding the personality of his subject in a single image. That instinct is why we trust him with our own artist portraits. His work is already in international collections, and we suspect that is just the beginning.
