Gonzalez, known for his experimental approach, paints a diverse range of subjects. His work spans from nostalgic childhood memories to intimate domestic scenes with his children, still life depictions in the home, and even animals like the bull, a powerful symbol in Costa Rican culture.
Drawing inspiration from modern masters such as Gauguin and Picasso, Gonzalez infuses his artworks with Cubist elements and earthy tones, creating vibrant and emotive compositions.
This abstract figurative painting, “El Aprendiz,” (which translates to “The Apprentice”) presents an abstract portrayal of two figures – one smaller figure resembling a child and the other an adult, mounted on horseback. Gonzalez has reduced the forms to geometric shapes and semi-abstracted, biomorphic forms.
Gonzalez approached this abstract figurative painting with his typical spontaneity, allowing the colours and forms to unfold organically. He notes, “the colours present themselves; they are not planned. They flow through me.”
