Description

Introducing “Crotos en Paisaje”, an abstract leaf painting by Carlos Fernández.

Nestled in the mountains of Santa Ana, San José, Fernández finds inspiration in the lush surroundings of the farm where he lives, inspired by renowned artists such as Julie Mehretu and Joseph Beuys. Achiote is a spice and colouring agent extracted from the seeds of the evergreen Bixa orellana shrub, which is native to Central America and found on his Santa Ana farm.

Fernández’s farm is his main source of sustenance and artistic materials, allowing him to integrate natural elements such as achiote, soil, beeswax, and turmeric with acrylics. Fernández’s work reveals a dialogue between art and the environment as he layers fragments of soil and beeswax to create intricate textures and patterns. With a belief that “pigment is food,” Fernández integrates spices like turmeric and achiote directly onto his canvases.

For Fernández, art is a contextual practice akin to tending a garden. He carefully observes his environment and embarks on a series of exercises before translating his perceptions onto canvas, photographs, or even through performances. In this abstract leaf painting, Fernández has loosely rendered botanical fragments from achiote, beeswax and soil, creating forms that emerge from a pale, textured ground. The soil has been worked into the surface to suggest landscape as well as the quiet patterns of decay, regrowth, and mineral time.
