Cortos en Paisaje is an abstract leaf painting by Carlos Fernández. Achiote is a spice and colouring agent extracted from the seeds of the evergreen Bixa orellana shrub. This painting features an earthy red/brown rectangle with orangey-yellow leaves that appear printed on top, set against an off-white background. This composition captures the essence of nature while highlighting Fernández’s innovative use of colour.
Nestled in the mountains of Santa Ana, San José, Fernández finds inspiration in the lush landscape around the farm where he lives, as well as the visual language of renowned artists, such as Julie Mehretu and Joseph Beuys.
The farm serves not only as a source of sustenance but also as a wellspring of artistic materials as Fernández integrates natural elements such as soil, beeswax, and turmeric into his acrylic paintings. This particular abstract leaf painting is an intimate dialogue between art and the environment, as Fernández incorporates the spice achiote, with soil, beeswax and acrylic.
