Agrofit #1 is a black acrylic painting by Carlos Fernández that combines the themes of farming and fitness, creating a powerful protest against destructive agricultural policies. The Agrofit painting is part of a series where Fernández blends his organic farming aesthetics from the Santa Ana hills with a fitness-driven narrative, all while challenging the status quo.
Fernández draws inspiration from the natural beauty of his surroundings. Nestled in the mountains of Santa Ana, San José, he finds inspiration in the lush landscape around the farm where he lives, as well as the visual language of renowned artists, such as Julie Mehretu and Joseph Beuys. Fernández blurs the lines between art and nature, often integrating elements like soil, beeswax, and turmeric into his acrylic works.
In his black pieces, like this agrofit painting, Fernández uses the rich black soil from his environment, infusing it with subtle pigments for depth and complexity. His approach creates a visual impact, emphasising the dark, fertile earth while reflecting the challenges faced by modern farmers.
“My work is a reflection of my environment,” explains Fernández. “Like tending a garden, I begin with careful observation before translating my findings onto canvas, creating a visual narrative that conveys the essence of my surroundings.”
