Description
Introducing Paisaje #11, a black soil painting by Carlos Fernández, made with 80% black soil, 1% acrylic paint and 19% transparent gel acrylic.
Fernández’s farm in the mountains around Santa Ana is his main source of sustenance and artistic materials, allowing him to integrate natural elements such as soil, beeswax, and turmeric with acrylics. Fernández’s works between art and the environment as he layers fragments of his surroundings to create intricate textures and patterns. With a belief that “pigment is food,” Fernández integrates spices like turmeric and achiote directly onto his canvases.
For Fernández, art is a contextual practice akin to tending a garden. He carefully observes his environment and embarks on a series of exercises before translating his perceptions onto canvas, photographs, or even through performances.
Paisaje #11 features a dynamic composition of leaves appearing from the darkness of a forest floor, lit from an unknown source. The larger, main leaf forms appear as pale, natural shapes, flickering across the canvas against the black field below. They have a graphic quality but also feel organic, as though caught mid-movement.
This is a bold, dark black soil painting, but the black contains none of the harshness of paint. With 80% of the surface made from the dark soil of Carlos’s farm, the colour is organic and has a softness to it — a depth that comes from the earth rather than a tube.
Framing not included.
