Description

Rodríguez-Chaves’ Untitled (Paisaje) — a collage inspired oil painting — reimagines the familiar language of animation to question how images circulate, mutate and influence collective memory. The Costa Rican artist draws on the collage tradition, combining figures, landscapes and symbolic fragments to blur the distinction between fiction and historical record.

Working across databases, printed photographs, and digital resources, Rodríguez-Chaves distorts and reconstructs images, turning acts of reproduction into quiet gestures of critique. The resulting surface — playful and uneasy — reflects on how ideology is embedded within the images that define our visual culture.

In this collage inspired oil painting painting, humour and history intersect, revealing the contradictions of popular imagery and its role in shaping cultural narratives. Rodríguez-Chaves encourages viewers to look beyond the image’s apparent innocence and to question the systems of meaning that sustain it.
