Description
In La Orilla del Tiempo, Lorena Villalobos works in oil and cold wax on canvas laid down on wood, a pale, worn landscape of stone, water and a single bare tree at the centre.
The surface has been scraped back and reworked — sediment and rust breaking through the grey and white — giving the painting the feel of something long exposed to weather. It is contemplative landscape painting in which time is the real subject: the slow accumulation of the natural world, layer by layer.
Art historian and former Costa Rican Minister of Culture Carlos Francisco Echeverría has described her work as among the most significant to have emerged from the region in recent times. She is among twenty-six artists named as Modern and Contemporary Masters in Central American Modernism (Ford and Snider, 2018).
