Description

Introducing “Gula” (Gluttony), an oil on canvas by Sylvia Laks, part of her Seven Capital Sins series showing in June and July 2025 at San José’s Museo Calderón Guardia.

Laks’ portraits are drawn from diverse themes and influences, including the human body, identity, memory, landscape, and spirituality. Working with a variety of materials, from charcoal and pastel drawings to oil painting on linen, Laks invites us to explore a myriad of mythical and mystical worlds from the realms of her imagination.

In “Gula”, Laks presents a figure swaddled in thick green wrappings, its swollen form bursting at the seams, with exposed flesh straining against constriction. A watchful bird perches above, evoking judgment and complicity, as gluttony is framed here as overindulgence and a visceral entrapment, of desire consuming the body from within.

Laks’s ability to blend realism with elements of the mystical and symbolic provides viewer with thought-provoking experiences. She focuses on the psychological expression of her characters, tapping into their emotions and providing a glimpse into their souls. Laks’ portraits, particularly her Seven Capital sins series, are enigmatic, where feminine beauty unites with powerful natural forces, creating a delicate balance that is soothing and unsettling.
