Description
From Jesus Mejia’s Vitacor al Soño Eterno (Diary of the Eternal Dream) series.
Mejia is a prominent figure in Costa Rican contemporary art, known for his exploration of social issues through his bold figurative paintings. His practice, deeply influenced by Baroque tenebrism and Catholic symbolism, focuses on themes of faith, aging, and personal history.
In this series, Mejia turns his attention to the intimate and often challenging realities of old age and Alzheimer’s. Each artwork in this body of evocative figure painting offers a poignant reflection on memory, legacy, and the universal human experience of care, loss, and aging.
“La Cuidadora 2,” (“The Caregiver 2”) the largest painting in the series, presents the often-overlooked role of the caregiver, focusing on the intimate act of bathing an elderly loved one. This caregiver painting not only highlights the physical demands of caregiving but also underscores the emotional toll it takes, addressing themes of aging, vulnerability, and the dignity inherent in this vital, yet frequently neglected, experience.
