Description
From Jesus Mejia’s “Dreamland” series.
Mejia is a prominent figure in Costa Rican contemporary art, known for his exploration of social issues through his bold figurative paintings. His practice, influenced by Baroque tenebrism and Catholic symbolism, focuses on themes of faith, humanity and personal history.
In this Dreamland series, Mejia presents a luminous shift into the subconscious, trading realism for sensory and symbolic landscapes shaped by dreams, childhood memory, and emotional release.
In “La Luna de oro” (The Golden Moon), Mejia builds a nocturnal world lit from within, where a reclining figure cradles a glowing orb as if it were a lantern and a secret. Swathed in ochre and emerald fabric, the body becomes a constellation of its own—part human, part myth. The golden moon hovers above and within reach, held tenderly.
As with other works in Mejia’s Dreamland series, here the laws of gravity and logic dissipate into sensation: warmth, intimacy, and the surreal comfort of a universe that bends to the rhythm of sleep and longing.
