Sembrador y Sombrero is a bright yellow farmer with sombrero painting by Carlos Fernández. The painting pays homage to Fernández’s life on the farm, where he draws inspiration from his surroundings and the daily rhythms of rural life.
Nestled in the mountains of Santa Ana, San José, Fernández finds inspiration in the lush landscape around the farm where he lives, as well as the visual language of renowned artists, such as Julie Mehretu and Joseph Beuys. Often, Fernández merges organic elements with acrylic paint to forge a symbiotic relationship between art and nature. He also sometimes uses clay sourced from the hills surrounding his farm in his compositions, blended with paint in a unique ratio that showcases the earth’s natural hues.
For Fernández, art is a deeply contextual practice, akin to tending a garden. He observes his environment, embarking on a series of exercises before translating onto canvas, photographs, or even performances.
