Description
Gonzalez, known for his experimental approach, paints a diverse range of subjects. His work spans from nostalgic childhood memories to intimate domestic scenes with his children, still life depictions in the home, and even animals like the bull, a powerful symbol in Costa Rican culture.
Drawing inspiration from modern masters such as Gauguin and Picasso, Gonzalez infuses his artworks with Cubist elements and earthy tones, creating vibrant and emotive compositions.
“La Codicia de Cortés” (translated as “The Greed of Cortés” in English), is a Hernán Cortés painting, portraying the Spanish conquistador known for his conquest of the Aztec Empire. The painting features Cortés holding an apple, symbolising his insatiable greed.
Gonzalez approached this Hernán Cortés painting with his typical spontaneity, allowing the colours and forms to unfold organically. He notes, “the colours present themselves; they are not planned. They flow through me.”
