Miguel Hernández Bastos employs a unique technique in his artworks, using pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, and the unconventional medium of smoke from an oil lamp, which burns onto the canvas like pigment. This distinctive approach allows him to explore themes of metamorphosis and the fleeting essence of the human form, while also incorporating historical symbolism associated with the candle in Renaissance portraiture.
Sueños is a rare landscape oil painting from Hernández-Bastos where he’s constructed a dreamlike terrain simply using oil painit. Geological forms shift subtly into anthropomorphic outlines. The composition creates a nostaglic quality as the landscape softly shifts and changes on the canvas.
This landscape oil painting is a continuation of Hernández Bastos’s method of conjuring mechanical elements into his compositions. While there are no discernable figures here, the natural world appears to float and shapes merge, giving it his trademark futuristic quality.
Predominantly working in black and white, the artist occasionally introduces subtle hints of colour over the smoke, adding layers of depth to his figures or landscape.
