Description

Sylvia Laks’ portraits are drawn from diverse themes and influences, including the human body, identity, memory, landscape, and spirituality. Working with a variety of materials, from charcoal and pastel drawings to oil painting on linen, Laks invites us to explore a myriad of mythical and mystical worlds from the realms of her imagination.

“Peste y Circo,” meaning “plague and circus” in English, is a painting that conveys an unsettling and evocative atmosphere through its depiction of two discarded masks. The masks themselves are haunting, their faces twisted in expressions of anguish that seem almost alive; they suggest human involvement in their creation and use, yet their abandonment and the absence of an actual figure are deeply unnerving.

This plague and circus painting evokes a sense of disquiet and intrigue, as viewers are drawn into the eerie world where the masks hint at a story of suffering and chaos. It invites contemplation on the dark and enigmatic aspects of human experience, exploring themes of illusion, identity, and the unsettling nature of the unknown.

Laks’s ability to blend realism with elements of the mystical and symbolic provides viewer with thought-provoking experiences. She focuses on the psychological expression of her characters, tapping into their emotions and inviting you to glimpse into their souls, and unravel their curious narratives.
