Introducing Sueño Gélido, a striking bright figure painting by Emilia Cantor.
Known for her charged colour palettes, Cantor sets deep magentas, purples, and pinks against stark fields of black, generating a deliberate visual tension. Her work is inspired by a formal, European painting tradition, honed during her training at the Florence Academy of Art, yet her approach to colour is distinctly contemporary, influenced by design colour and the digital world’s heightened saturation and light manipulation.
Influenced by artists such as Odd Nerdrum, Hieronymus Bosch, and Francisco Goya, Cantor brings a surrealist sensibility to her compositions. In this bright figure painting, a spectral female figure, painted in jet black, stares out from the canvas, her gaze intensified by the surrounding warmth of layered orange tones. The background, built up through successive layers, allows hints of the original orange to emerge, lending the composition a subtle luminosity beneath its surface.
Cantor’s work operates in this deliberate fusion of tradition and modernity, where classical techniques meet an aesthetic language shaped by contemporary design and digital influence.
