Sylvia Laks’ portraits are drawn from diverse themes and influences, including the human body, identity, memory, landscape, and spirituality. Working with a variety of materials, from charcoal and pastel drawings to oil painting on linen, Laks invites us to explore a myriad of mythical and mystical worlds from the realms of her imagination.
Laks’ witch portraits, such as Bruja 2, depicts a witch standing the length of the canvas, holding a cow’s skull. The skull obscures half of her face, while its horns extend out to either side, framing her head in an imposing and eerie manner, as she stares out of the canvas.
The witch appears topless, wearing only a vivid green skirt, adding to the striking and provocative imagery. The background is adorned with patterns in red, which creates a luxurious and sensuous atmosphere that complements the witch’s commanding presence. The animal skull enhances the painting’s dark, otherworldly aura, suggesting a deep connection with primal forces and ancient rituals.
