Description

Rodríguez-Chaves’ Onslaught — a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders painting — reinterprets the language of pop culture with critical reflection. The Costa Rican artist, known for merging collage and painting, is inspired by archival and digital sources to explore the relationship between perception, ideology, and representation.

In this Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders painting, three cheerleaders appear poised and assertive, their recognisable uniforms transformed into visual icons that oscillate between empowerment and spectacle. Rodríguez-Chaves manipulates found imagery, archival material and digital fragments to expose how collective memory is built from repetition and fantasy.

By reframing familiar imagery, he challenges viewers to consider the politics of representation and the cultural forces that shape contemporary mythologies. Onslaught extends his ongoing examination of the image as a site of seduction and critique — a reflection on the porous boundary between entertainment and ideology.
