Description
In EMDR VII, thousands of threads are embroidered into and onto the canvas — inks and acrylic on canvas with textile intervention, ámate paper used as a stencil in the first layer, black and white threads building a dense horizontal mass across the centre with branching forms above and below. The pale blue-grey ground reads as sky seen from below, the forms spreading outward like a forest canopy viewed from the forest floor.
The work is part of Alessandra Sequeira’s Enraizada – Donde el Miedo se Desvanece series, presented at the Calderón Guardia Museum, San José in 2026, canvases made during and following her engagement with EMDR therapy.
Sequeira describes the making of this work as resistance as a bodily gesture — the force and stress of the threads and the material felt in every layer. She is recognised for her contemporary textile painting in Costa Rica and internationally, with an extensive exhibition record spanning Costa Rica, Europe and Latin America.
