Description

Introducing Rumination, a gothic old man painting by Emilia Cantor.

Cantor’s canvases are a riot of emotionally charged contrasts, as vibrant hues of magenta, purples, and pinks clash against stark expanses of black, creating a visual tension that pulsates with otherworldly energy. Against this dramatic backdrop, Cantor introduces enigmatic forms— humanoid creatures, fantastic animals, and abstract shapes— that serve as portals to mysterious realms beyond our comprehension.

Influenced by artists such as Odd Nerdrum, Hieronymus Bosch, and Francisco Goya, Cantor brings a surrealist sensibility to her compositions. Her work is inspired by a formal, European painting tradition, honed during her training at the Florence Academy of Art, yet her approach to colour is distinctly contemporary, influenced by design colour and the digital world’s heightened saturation and light manipulation.

Through her emotionally charged compositions, such as this gothic old man painting, Cantor aims to challenge, inspire, and ultimately transcend our realities.

A latin american contemporary painting titled Ecos del Primer Dios by Emilia Cantor depicts a glowing golden face with sun-like rays emerging between darkened buildings under a deep blue night sky. The face, illuminated against the shadowed architecture, gazes outward with an expression that feels both human and divine. Bold brushstrokes and rich tones of blue, gold, and red create a sense of mystery and tension, while the foreground dissolves into near-black shadow, suggesting a stairway or passage leading into darkness.
