Miguel Hernández Bastos employs a unique technique in his artworks, using pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, and the unconventional medium of smoke from an oil lamp, which burns onto the canvas like pigment. This distinctive approach allows him to delve into themes of metamorphosis and the fleeting essence of the human form, while also incorporating historical symbolism associated with the candle in Renaissance portraiture.
In “Naturaleza y Esperanza,” Hernández Bastos applies smoke and oil on canvas to capture the delicate yet intricate nature of the human body and to infuse the figures with elements of nature. Within the composition, leaves and organic forms intertwine with the contours of the figure’s form, perhaps symbolising resilience and growth amidst fragility.
Furthermore, Hernández Bastos integrates mechanical elements into his compositions, as his figures seem to float and merge across the canvas, imbuing his works with a futuristic quality. Despite this, he balances historical symbolism with themes of eroticism, tenderness, and isolation, creating a multi-dimensional narrative that resonates with viewers.
Predominantly working in black and white, Hernández Bastos here has mixed smoke and oil on canvas, adding colour and layers of depth to enhance the figures’ presence.
