Description
Gonzalez, known for his experimental approach, paints a diverse range of subjects. His work spans from nostalgic childhood memories to intimate domestic scenes with his children, still life depictions in the home, and even animals like the bull, a powerful symbol in Costa Rican culture.
He is greatly inspired by modern masters such as Gauguin and Picasso, and infuses his work with Cubist elements and earthy tones, creating vibrant and emotive compositions. Gonzalez approaches his painting with spontaneity, as seen in this still life painting, allowing the colours and forms to unfold organically as he immerses himself in the creative process. He notes, “the colours present themselves; they are not planned. They flow through me.”
The Latin American still life painting tradition has a long history. The bodegón — the kitchen still life depicting everyday objects, local earthenware and food — emerged during the colonial period as painters began turning away from purely religious and political commissions towards the material world around them.
This still life painting at first looks like a traditional still life — four bottles on a green surface, set against an abstracted background of bruised purples, ochres and flashes of red — but what Gonzalez is really working through is presence: the relationships between forms that occupy the same space, and how colour, used structurally, helps to construct the composition.
