This Yemayá painting depicts the queen of the sea, an ancient and revered deity who first emerged in Yorubaland, now part of modern Nigeria. As a primordial figure considered the mother of all, Yemayá is thought to be the root of numerous ancient goddesses.
Laks presents her floating serenely above the ocean at night, illuminated by the moonlight that bathes her in a soft, ethereal glow. She emphasises Yemayá’s spiritual and feminine power, as the goddess exudes a calm yet commanding presence over the waves below.
