These Olive Ridley turtles, around 90cm/3ft long, were photographed off Bat Island, Costa Rica, home to the world’s largest nesting beaches for the species. In this Olive Ridley mating photograph, a female turtle is at the bottom while two males are piled on top.

This situation poses a risk for the female, as she may struggle to breathe under the weight of the males, which could be fatal. Additionally, the female sometimes resists mating, which can be exhausting for her as she fights off the males.

Though Edwar Herreno had encountered this scenario before, the turtles usually swam away before he could take a photo. However, he was fortunate and patient enough to capture the struggle with this Olive Ridley mating photograph.
