Accompanying an NGO on their mission to protect sharks in Costa Rica’s Cocos Island, Edwar Herreno embarked on a unique adventure aboard a converted whale hunting vessel. Amidst this conservation campaign, he encountered a remarkable sight: a whale shark gracefully circling the boat. Inspired by this moment, Edwar envisioned a split-shot photograph that would capture the essence of this encounter. This striking image went on to win second prize in the United Nations World Oceans Day competition.
Enduring a physically demanding 40-minute swim with the massive camera, Edwar navigated the challenges of the moving boat and the shark’s fluid movements. Despite exhaustion, the resulting photograph now proudly adorns the halls of the United Nations headquarters, celebrating United Nations World Oceans Day — as an emblem of the beauty and importance of ocean conservation.
