Semi-finalist image of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award at the Natural History Museum in London, England.
The whitetip reef shark is one of the few species capable of stopping its swimming and resting on the ocean floor, breathing by pumping water through its mouth. Edwar Herreno worked hard for four years to produce this cleaner fish photograph, and to show how the tiny fish swiftly removes parasites from the shark.
Whenever Herreno approached the shark, bubbles or currents would cause it to swim away, while the small cleaner fish, easily frightened due to its size and predators, added further difficulty. Using specialised, silent, bubble-free equipment, Herreno approached slowly for at least 20 minutes and captured this shark and cleaner fish photograph.
Working alone without lighting or a crew, Herreno was able to take this image that reached the semi-final of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the Natural History Museum in London.
